Ahh! New season! I think The Duel was one of the best ones this season. Freaking hilarious, actually.

The opening was priceless.

Michael: I want another try. Here we go. *runs as car goes by* Thirty-one! Thirty-one!
Stanley: That was the car.
Michael: I was ahead of the car. Thirty-one is my new number.
Oscar: Thirty-one is humanly impossible.
Michael: Go, Oscar. Thirty-one is my new number.
Oscar: That's impossible.
Michael: Beat it!

Love it.

Haha! That was hilarious! Only Michael Scott would believe he could really run 31 mph laugh.gif

Did anybody see thursday's episode? Wow, I feel so sorry for Michael. However, I thought Pam's performance at the Lecture after he crawled out of the room was hilarious. The very idea of Pam trying to act like Michael is priceless. Man, they have such good writers.

whereas in the UK one they were just extra's with a few lines. Thinking about it now, I'm not too sure there's currently anything in the American one that even remotely resembles the British one, even the main characters are totally different. As a stubborn fan of the original I'm really pleased with how the American one has come along, I refused to support it at first but it's so brilliantly written and all the actors are adorable.

I wouldnt go so far as to as I refuse to support the american version, but it still doesnt hold a candle to the original. Its funny, but its uneven in ways that the original was not. Steve Carrel just isnt ricky gervais. Its one of the best american shows (30 rock is probably better), but I just cant believe so many people think the american version is better. It blows my mind.

And though Im no Olivier, If he fought Sugar Ray
He would say, That the thing aint the ring, its the play
So give me a stage, Where this bull here can rage
And though I can fight, Id much rather recite
Thats entertainment

I LITERALLY CANNOT UNDERSTAND THEM WHEN THEY TALK. It's hard to get the humor when every line makes you go, "Huh? What'd he say?"

I felt that way the first few times I watched it, but after 5 seasons you just learn to put them into completely different categories. They just took the concept and went in a different direction, so it's apples and oranges, really.

My only real problem with the show as it is now is that they seem to have forgotten about the reality show aspect. The characters still talk to the camera, but they do a lot of stuff (Michael trying to buy weed off the guy's at Vance Refrigeration, for example) that would get them into a lot of trouble; and in the first part of the last episode, the camera went from shooting Michael from behind, to shooting him from the front even though there's supposed to be just one camera.
It always confused me that they were filming for a reality show, yet when Jim and Pam kissed in the second season finale, Roy didn't find out about it until midway through the next season. Surely it would have aired on television? I also seem to be the only one who thinks the Superbowl episode was ridiculous. There were some funny moments, but the cold open was insane. A cat falling through the ceiling? Chairs being thrown through windows? I still like the show but it's getting incredibly broad for a "reality show".

One thing that I do admire about the show though is that they don't try to make the characters anything like the originals. I know at first they did, and there are little things such as Pam's passion for art that they incorporated into the American version but I wouldn't even bother to compare the two sets of characters. I think Steve Carell and Ricky Gervais both have their own charm; if the two characters were to ever meet I think the differences between them would really stand out. They might both be idiots, but personality wise they're really different. I do agree with you though that 30 Rock is amazing, and I would probably say it is better than The Office, but The Office is still one of the best American shows I have seen in years, despite it's flaws.

subtitles. Im a genius.

Anna:
I suppose if I watched it on a regular basis, I would like it more. I catch it when my roommates watch it and thats about it. I just never remember to watch anything on a regular basis, even shows that I really like (south park, the daily show, 30 rock, etc) so Im definitely not going to be able to regularly watch a show that I think is not as good as the british version I have on DVD. I agree that its better that they moved away from following the original, that helps me to some degree. When it was almost exactly the same, I couldnt really watch it, Id always leave and go watch the british version on DVD.

I think you made some good points here. When you really think about it, some of the stuff that doesn't get discovered by other characters and/or happens in the show is pretty unbelievable. However, tv has always had a certain level of "suspension of disbelief." The Office is no different. If they tried to make it too realistic, then I don't think it would be as brilliant as it is. I really don't care if they are stretching certain concepts of reality tv for the sake of art. This is by far one of the best shows i've ever seen. Good post though. I never really gave much thought to some of your points.

Go Adam Lambert!

And I can't deny your eyes
Who said that it's better to have loved and lost?
I wish that I had never loved at all
